Abstract :
A mathematical model of the human renal and associated subsystems, developed as part of a systems approach to the management of renal dialysis patients, is described. The results of a sequence of parameter estimation procedures, together with associated identifiability analysis, are presented. These were conducted both to determine unknown parameters in patients and as part of an extensive validation exercise. The relationship between system identification and model validation is analysed. The ability of the model to track the major clinical variables is described together with details of model developments required for effective clinical implementation.
