            Abstract : 
A new optically active biphenyl compound has been synthetised. By incorporating this in certain biphenyl nematogens, a chemically/photochemically stable room-temperature cholesteric liquid crystal is produced. This is of positive dielectric anisotropy and gives the cholesteric-nematic electro-optical phase-change effect.
