Abstract :
This paper reviews recent developments in the asymptotic vector-wave treatment of inhomogeneous optical fibres. A general theory is given, which is valid forarbitrary profiles of inhomogeneity, and the theory is illustrated by some specific examples of near-parabolic profiles. Analytic solutions are given for various profiles. Anomalous behaviour of polarisation for certain hybrid modes is discussed in terms of the medium profiles.
