Abstract :
A triple layer index profile for tapered fibre beam expanders is designed. It is shown that it reduces the coupling losses between two unequal circular waveguides when compared to the use of a single-layer index profile. It is also shown that the ellipticity of the modal field can be changed simultaneously with the size of the modal field using this triple layer profile.
