Abstract :
It has been established that leaky modes are significant in graded, as well as step-index, fibres. The difficulties of launching bound modes without leaky modes have been mentioned previously, and in this letter the degree of selection that is practicable in fibres with circular symmetric index profiles is described. The results apply equally to output distributions.
