Abstract
The problem of the joint optimization of transmitting and receiving filters is considered for a data transmitting system in which the channel may he represented during transmission by any element of an ensemble of system functions. It is shown that for any reasonable measure of performance such a system has an optimum receiving filter of a specific structure which, in the joint solution, leads to the existence of minimum total mean-square error filters which are bandlimited to a generalized Nyquist interval.
