Abstract :
The paper presents a study of the significance of phase distortion in digital transmission systems. Beginning with a review of the eye diagram and contour map criteria, we compare their advantages and disadvantages with those of the mean-square error and probability of error criteria. Using the eye diagram and contour map criteria, we then employ cosine rolloff, Cheb$yshev and Butterworth functions as examples, arriving at the conclusion that phase distortion is significant and some form of phase equalisation is necessary for reliable digital transmission.
