Abstract
The paper reviews the need for overhead line switching equipment and its use in developing countries for the control of long radial feeders into remote districts. The requirements for pole-mounted equipment and relaying characteristics are discussed showing the need for sensitive earth fault discrimination, particularly to detect broken conductors in regions of high earth resistance. Designs of pole-mounted, autoreclosers are discussed. Sectionalising equipment is also reviewed in the context of fault management on spur lines.
