Abstract :
A new probe is described, in which an ultrasound receiver constructed from a piezoelectric polymer is combined with a forward-looking coaxial optical fibre for laser-induced ultrasound. The size of the transducer system is such that it offers in medicine both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool, and has potential for combining the role of intra-arterial imaging with therapy.
