Abstract :
The pulse distortion due to energy reconversion from higher-order modes into the fundamental mode in randomly bent single-mode fibres is calculated. Pulse distortion can be reduced by either introducing mode filters or by a sufficiently large attenuation of the higher-order modes. Simple design considerations are given.
