Design¿the requirements of maintenance

The papers are taken from a colloquium on `Design¿the requirements of maintenance¿, organised by the Design Group (M1) of the IEE´s Management and Design Division. Six congtributors deal with aspects of maintainability. Examples include Ford´s entry of the small-car market, easy owner maintenance being a prime consideration; the design process adopted by British Aerospace in their production of military aircraft; and the consideration of reliability, availability and maintainability in the design of a network of UHF broadcast transmitters. Also included are papers on the consideration of the cost of imperfect design, standards of reliability and servicing of domestic appliances and the role of maintenance engineers in industry, which discusses the feedback from maintenance to design. Terotechnology (life-cycle costing) is defined and a summary of the discussion on the papers is presented.
