System approach to a broader concept in engineering education: the WPI plan

The paper describes a comprehensive new approach to engineering education at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. Students are encouraged to assume an important degree of responsibility for their own educational programme and are assessed on their performance on two substantial projects as well as by a competency examination in their major field. Evaluation studies of the course have shown that the original objectives have been achieved.
