Abstract :
For over half a decade, the Russian dream of a prosperous market economy has borne a curious resemblance to a nightmare. Fortunes have been made by commodity-touting crooks and a narcodollar-laundering Mafia, professors are driving minicabs, the homeless are dying on the streets. Here, the author describes how however, for the past few years, a determined band of economists has been getting to grips with the real issues, and order may yet emerge from the chaos.<>
