Abstract :
Ansaldo and ENEA have carried out the design of a Nb/sub 3/Sn solenoid, 0.6-m bore, wound with a cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) and manufactured with the wind react technique. A general overview of the work done is presented. The solenoid will be tested in the SULTAN facility where, under operating conditions, it will be subjected to a magnetic field of 12 T on the inner radius, with a current of 6 kA. An accurate description, including the critical energy calculation, the quench behavior, and the stress analysis, is reported. A verification analysis of the final design has been carried out. In particular, the authors analyzed the problem of the quench evolution in the coil and the mechanical behavior of the winding. The final design has been checked by manufacturing a model coil. The model coil has been successfully tested.<>
