Abstract :
Variations in mechanical stress applied to an optical fibre result in a phase modulation of coherent light propagating along the fibre. Mechanical vibration modes of the fibre have been found to play an important role in this process. This letter describes the effect of these vibration modes and presents experimental evidence of the accentuation of the phase modulation due to one of these modes.
