  • Abstract
Starting from a definition of the terms engineer, society and professional, a link is established between the low pay and low status of the professional engineer. Methods by which the status of the professional engineer can be increased are then discussed, with particular emphasis on professional communication. The concept of engineering ethics is then described together with an analysis of professional conduct as seen by the IEE. The paper is concluded by a series of case studies, both factual and fictional, to illustrate the issues raised.
