Abstract :
Recently, Ashworth and Davies concluded that the theory of special relativity cannot be tested by reflection of light from a mirror moving parallel to itself. It is now shown that the corner reflector, which is already implemented in the space vehicle LAGEOS, is equally inadequate. However, the corner reflector does produce a second-order transverse Doppler effect, as already noted by Dashchuk. This provides a method for monitoring transverse motion. It is suggested that this be tested in the experiment of Davies and Jennison.
