Abstract
This article argues that short-term pressures, to which R&D people in industry undoubtedly feel themselves to be subject, often originate within the company. While the UK system does not encourage long-term thinking, it does not prevent it, and companies should do more to demonstrate that their long-term investments are paying off.<>
