Abstract :
Spatial hole burning is suppressed in linear Er3+ fibre lasers by two alternative modulation schemes. They move the standing wave pattern, formed by the two counterpropagating waves, along the gain medium in an oscillatory or continuous way. Output bandwidths <5 kHz result.
