Abstract :
A method is presented for the analytical characterisation of monomode, circularly symmetric or planar, waveguides with arbitrary refractive-index profiles in terms of much simpler `equivalent waveguides¿. The method is also used to derive the only known examples of practically significant monomode-fibre profiles with completely analytical descriptions, i.e. not even requiring the solution of an eigenvalue equation.
