  • Abstract
    The presence of water vapour in the ambient of (Al,Ga)As d.h. lasers is found to be a main cause of facet erosion and gradual output degradation. Facet erosion and gradual degradation are absent in lasers operated in a vacuum of 2×10¿8 torr at c.w. output powers of up to 4 mW per ¿m stripe width.
