Abstract :
The authors provide an overview of severe-accident research by (1) describing a generalized low-probability severe accident and (2) providing an enumeration of the individual characteristics of current light-water reactors which are likely to influence the progression of the generalized accident. They discuss current issues in source term calibration. Three research programs that are being conducted to establish a database for evaluating these accidents are described.<>
