Abstract
Computer-controlled digital music synthesis will profoundly affect popular music in the next decade. This paper gives a brief historical account of music synthesis. The most important aspects of digital synthesis are described and compared with analog techniques. One way of achieving a practical digital musical instrument using currently available technology is presented. Both hardware and software aspects are considered.
