Abstract :
A summary is provided on the effects of ionizing radiation on present generation optical fibers. In particular, the paper focuses on the magnitude and the spectral and temporal characteristics of the radiation-induced transmission losses in irradiated fibers. The most radiation resistant classes of fibers are identified and possible approaches for further improvements in fiber performance are suggested.
