Abstract :
This paper gives an overview about the development and the state of art in loop systems with distributed access and decentralized exchange. Emphasis is given to the application of optical transmission systems. Recent results about feasibility, economical aspect, reliability and system structures are reported. It is shown, that optical-fiber systems and the progress in very large scale integration of semiconductors will enable to realize economical systems with distributed access and high performance.
