Abstract
Flat domain shift registers can be designed with high storage densities when local magnetostatic fields are built in the structure. These static fields allow the non volatile storage of small domains, eventually smaller than 10 μm in length, in 1000 Å thick Ni Co P films chemically deposited on glass substrates. The superimposition of driving fields on the static fields, when properly located, allow the unilateral propagation of domains, particularly since the collapse threshold is dependant upon domain size. A simplified analytical model allows the description of the shifting mechanism and gives insights into the sensitivity of various parameters.
