Abstract
Results are presented that show deterioration in the radar clutter cancellation caused by progressive depolarisation of circularly polarised waves in rain and snow. The data were obtained with a 1.8 cm dual-channel polarisation diversity radar. The use of optimum elliptical polarisation in heavy rain shows up to 12 dB improvement in cancellation over that obtained with circular polarisation.
