Abstract :
Multimode optical stripe waveguide Y-intersections were made by the ion-exchange process. A simple ray theory describes the variation of coupling with guide dimensions and intersection angle. Measurements at visible and infra-red wavelengths show good agreement with theory. The Y-coupler has application in fibre communication systems.
