            Abstract :
Technical constraints and their solutions for a cost-effective point-to-point Ku-band satellite communications service are examined. The topics covered are: optimization of antenna size (hardware cost versus space segment cost); transponder operating point optimization; choice of forward error correction coding; transmission impairment, such as weather-related phenomena, depolarization, and interference; and system margins and transponder capacity.<>
