Abstract
Automation of the image shearing measurement technique applied to optical fibre geometry is discussed. The use of digital filters and a multilayer neural network to identify the critical ´just touch´ condition are compared. Measurements of cladding diameter using both methods are presented which demonstrate the superior repeatability of the neural network approach.
