Abstract
A new generation of optoelectronic signal processors, many exploiting acoustooptic technology, has been developing during the past several years. These processors are designed to perform algebraic operations like matrix-vector and matrix-matrix multiplication. Major architectures are reviewed, including one that performs with digital accuracy. Processor capabilities are assessed in terms of fundamental limitations, and certain practical limitations are discussed.
