Abstract :
Preliminary qualitative experimental results are given for the separation of emulsions using single wire HGMS. It is shown that magnetic separation may be used to separate liquid mixtures in two cases: 1) When the continuous phase is a paramagnetic liquid and the discrete phase is a diamagnetic liquid, and 2) When the continuous phase is a diamagnetic liquid and the discrete phase is a paramagnetic liquid. Control of the paramagnetic aqueous fluid is obtained by adding a paramagnetic salt to the water. For both cases, tracings of the liquid droplet buildup on a single wire in the axial flow configuration are given. Qualitative comparisons are made between droplet buildup and particle buildup. It is shown that the initial buildup rate for the paramagnetic droplets does not appear to follow models developed for solid particles, and reasons for these differences are discussed.
