Abstract :
A little over 50 years ago, on October 4, 1957, the world was shocked that the USSR had launched the first Earth-orbiting satellite. The International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) was established by an international scientific committee as a program for exploration and discovery for the Earth and near space.
