Abstract :
The challenge to engineers posed by the change of the local telecommunications business from a mature business to a competitive and rapidly evolving one is discussed. Five keys to success for communications engineers in the ´90s are offered. They are to listen to customers, develop technologies that can help deliver tomorrow´s services today, put control closer to the customer, think in terms of open systems, and build alliances.<>
