Abstract :
We have started extensive works for designing the superconducting conductor for 250 MW to 3 GW cryogenic generators. Numerical computations have been developed to calculate the winding temperature rise due to transient electrical and magnetic variations or in case of quenching. Optimized cables made of composites containing 5μm to 10μm NbTi filaments in mixed matrix and a normal metal wire to detect quenching voltages have been designed and manufactured. Epoxy impregnated coils made with these cables have been tested in dc and pulsed conditions up to 40 T/s.
