Abstract :
For ZEPHYR, designed as a high-field tokamak for controlling a burning plasma, an unshielded toroidal field (TF) magnet cooled by liquid nitrogen, was envisaged. This paper reviews the major stress reactions of the tape-wound magnet and its support structure. For the case of the TF loading the interaction of the magnet and support structure is investigated in detail by means of a FE code. Free sliding between the coil and casing as well as the influence of friction are taken into account. Additionally, two ways of distributing the toroidal vault reaction are compared. The discussion of the results will focus on the coil support reactions and the ensuing shear stresses of the winding insulation.
