Abstract
Areas in which measurements provide insight into power system performance are discussed. They include: load modeling; equipment modeling; dynamic stability; voltage stability; steady-state stability; and changes in system behavior. Quantities of interest for monitoring are identified. Sample frequency and duration are considered. The Dynamic System Monitor (DSM), an instrument implemented on an industrial-class IBM-AT-compatible computer and specifically designed to record fundamental frequency voltage and current on electrical power systems, is described.<>
