Abstract
Purdue University established the first academic department of computer sciences in 1962. The events leading to its establishment are chronicled and its first 35 years of development presented. Nationally, computer science departments experienced a steady increase in size and activities, which were reflected in Purdue´s experience. The two periods of crises in the department´s history were triggered by the two periods of national enrollment explosion in the number of undergraduate majors.
