Abstract :
Magnetostriction harmonics in single grains of grain-oriented 3.25% Silicon-iron are measured using a modified double stereo piezo-electric transducer technique. The influence of compressive stress along the [001] direction is to cause significant changes in the harmonics and these are explained by the effect of stress on the harmonic content of the flux-density waveform. A theory is evolved to relate harmonics of flux density and magnetostriction. This theory successfully predicts the effect of a measured phase-shift in flux-density third harmonic on the magnetostriction harmonics. It is suggested that the phase-shift results from a combination of B-H loop stress-induced distortion and the further distortion that takes place with the onset of magnetic saturation above 1.8 Tesla.
