Abstract :
The eigenparameters and eigenfields of the horseshoe-shaped waveguide (HSW) with a dielectric in the region of the capacitance gap are computed by a program based on a finite-element algorithm. The broadband coefficient in this transmission line may take on rather high values (greater than or equal to six). It is shown that the electric field of dominant and first high-order modes is concentrated in the dielectric. The HE1 mode field is distributed more densely near the symmetry axis of the HSW, and the HE2 mode field is distributed more densely near the media interface. Making use of this fact, the authors obtain simple approximate formulas for calculating the cutoff wavelengths and the broadband coefficient of the partially filled HSW
