Abstract
It is shown that it is possible to solve the Helmholtz equation with finite elements even in structures that are electrically long. Suitable basis functions are constructed from the modes of the changing cross-section of the structure; the modes themselves are obtained by a 1-D finite-element method (FEM) using high-order polynomials. Results are presented for transmission through a slab waveguide taper, and for the radiation loss in a Y junction. Since the modes of the cross-section are obtained numerically, the method is capable of modeling a wide range of geometries, and can probably be extended to 3-D
