Abstract :
Recent developments in the electromagnetic domain are placed in context with experiences in structural engineering, and the literature available is surveyed extensively. Several examples demonstrate how the readily available concepts of structural design optimization may be utilized in the development of design methodologies for electromagnetic optimization. The essential building blocks of numerical optimization algorithms that are based on finite elements to analyze the electromagnetic or structural state of the design are examined. The developments in both structural and electrical engineering are then compared. The examples presented show that structural design optimization can be utilized as a technology source for developments in electromagnetics
