Abstract
An algorithm that can automatically, adaptively, and quickly divide an area into finite elements of different dimensions for electromagnetic field analysis is described. When an area is divided, nodes are added or dividing lines are changed so as to minimize the energy of the whole area. The energy consists of magnetic stored energy for a static magnetic field and joule energy plus magnetic stored energy for an alternating magnetic field. To minimize the computing time, the energy change caused by the addition of individual small areas consisting of two elements that are adjacent to a dividing line is evaluated, and a node is added to the area where the energy difference is increased the most. This operation is repeated until the total node number equals the appointed number in the input data
