Abstract
We present a theoretical calculation which shows that optical solitary waves can propagate in an optical fibre in the femiosecond regime. The optical fibre which can support such a wave must exhibit negative third-order dispersion (ÿ0<0) and must be used close to an appropriate `operating¿ point (6ÿ/¿0ÿ¿1). Use of these waves will further increase the bandwidth of optical fibre communication systems.
