  • Abstract
    The letter describes a new approach to the design of mono-mode fibres where the index profile is synthesised rather than analysed. The method we have developed is one of multi-variate optimisation in which the index profile itself is treated as a variable in order to find the optimum profile function for particular fibre properties. We include some particular examples which justify the validity of this approach.
