Abstract :
An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) using a semiconductor laser as an optical pulse generator and as a back-scattered optical signal amplifier is reported. It is found that the detectable one-way loss of the apparatus is improved by 4.5 dB compared with the conventional OTDR using direct detection.
