Abstract :
A large amplitude ion acoustic wave has potential as a wiggler to produce short wavelength coherent electromagnetic radiation in a free electron laser (FEL). The frequency of radiation is given as ω1≃2γ02(ω0 /cs)νb cos θ0, where γ0 is the relativistic gamma factor, ω0 is the frequency of the ion acoustic wave propagating at angle θ0 with the electron beam and c s is the sound speed. The growth time of the instability at 10 μm turns out to be in the submicrosecond range at beam voltage ~1 MV and beam current ≈1.5 A
