Abstract :
A common thread that pervades literally all human activity is identifying patterns and relationships in the world around us. Such patterns and relationships are codified in tools that can have the form of theories, mathematical formulas and tables of data. These tools are used in research to develop, test, verify, adapt and extend theories as more data is taken or becomes available. They are used in application to design components and systems that will work predictably while satisfying specified performance characteristics. Examples are cited from information theory, signal processing, music, art, medicine and aviation
