Abstract :
A study is presented of the validity of some general suppositions of traveling waves on power cables. It is generally accepted that the load voltage during a switching transient will rise to not more than twice the input surge voltage magnitude, and that this can only be associated with relatively fast rise times. It is also generally held that the period of the oscillating load voltage is only dependent on the cable feeding the load. These assumptions are sometimes wrong. Simplified explanations based on basic circuit theory are given as to when this could happen.<>
