Abstract :
Thermomagnetic writing utilizing temperature dependence of coercivity was proposed in magneto-optical recording as high density thin film memory. Rare earth-transition metal(RE-TM) amorphous films with perpendicular magnetization(GdFe,GdCo,TbFe etc.) were successfully prepared by sputtering or evaporation technique. Multi-source rf-sputtering method was used to prepare a uniform amorphous film. Uniformity of compensation temperature, Curie temperature and coercivity over a wide area was fairly good under the insertion of the window. Amorphous TbFeCo,GdFeBi and GdCoBi films have been studied to obtain a higher Kerr rotation angle that is important characteristic of magneto-optic recording media.
